About
The Armory, a Historical Landmark, built in 1938, was designed by late architect and Canonsburg resident George W. Brugger. Use of the Armory was for troops serving with the Pennsylvania National Guard, Hospital Co. 108, 103rd Medical Regiment which saw serious action in the Battle of the Bulge and the Philippines during WWII. The last unit to occupy the Armory was Detachment 1, Company B, 1-110th Infantry Battalion before it closed in 2010 by a restructuring of the guard’s unit bases. The need to transform the Armory into a youth center is clear when considering the challenges that teenagers in Canonsburg face. According to the 2013 US Census Bureau, 24% of the households in Canonsburg are single parent homes, and of these single parent homes, 31% are living below the poverty level.
