Most of the children we serve are in foster care. We lead the continued growth and development of an extensive national network of CASA/GAL programs, each of which recruits, trains and supports volunteers. The Problem: Overwhelmed Systems 950 PROGRAMS IN 49 STATES * Child welfare systems are in a state of crisis, partly due to a devastating opioid epidemic. More than 440,00o children are in foster care on any given day. The average child in foster care spends more than a year in care. The volunteers provide a safe ear and voice for children and serve as an unbiased source of information to the court. The volunteers are given an enormous task of truly listening to a child, evaluating the environment and needs of a child and delivering that message to the court. In my experience with CASA, the volunteers have held true to their oath and the mission of CASA "to provide advocacy so every child who has experienced abuse or neglect can be safe, have a permanent home, and the opportunity to thrive." From the beginning of my career as a child abuse prosecutor to my current position as a dependency judge, I have comfort in knowing that I can count on the valuable work and information gleaned from CASA volunteers.
