It is run by local teens and open to teens 13-18. Dr. Mary Jo Podgurski and her team through the Academy for Adolescent Health and Washington Health System's Teen Outreach program hire and train six to ten 17-18-year-old teens every May. Each June, the outgoing teens mentor the incoming teens, who then take over in July for the next year's programs. The teen staff are supported by Dr. Podgurski's W&J College students and peer educator alumni under 25. The Center is open in the evening for social events, free tutoring, ASL classes, and for classes and demonstrations on crafts and cooking, with special events, like Peer Educator Trainings, held on the weekends. The Center offers community service opportunities for teens as well as periodic Youth Nights for 10-11 year olds, since adolescent issues appear to be starting younger. The 2022 group of teens organized a Banned Book Club, with readings and discussions and a presentation by an attorney on First Amendment issues. The Center has a long history of exploring the way humans treat one another, with a goal of understanding the need for respecting laws that honor worth and create community Guidelines set at every event include respect and the power of words. Essay contests Native American Heritage, and Disability awareness months are sponsored for Black History (annually). Women's History, with winning essays read at the Center Peer educators present workshops for adults and children on Respect Online that include practical ways to use social media with kindness.
